Home Daycare Safety Checklist

As a parent, my number one concern is always the safety of my children. When allowing others to care for them, I expect that the responsible adult will make safety a number one priority as well. Women who choose to run daycare businesses from their homes take on a huge responsibility in caring for other's children. It is important that daycare business owners purchase furniture that meets current safety standards. In addition, they must take an extra step and do the "little" things that may get overlooked. Finally, it is crucial that daycare business owners purchase an insurance policy that covers accidents that may occur.

Below is a check list of the "little" things to remember. Please note that these safety measures are suggested for your daycare, in no way is this list meant to be a comprehensive list of ALL safety related precautions/procedures. 10 Signs You Need a Holiday

If you're facing the prospect of another week at work, and the same old same old, then whey not do something about it? Perhaps you should take some time off work and get away for awhile.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

1. You need a break from work once in a while. Why not delegate your workload, or see if anybody even notices that you're not there?

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

2. You want some sun, and just don't get enough of it from sitting in an office or a factory for 8 hours a day. Why not treat yourself to a beach holiday somewhere?

3. You're fed up of seeing the same walls at work, and at home, and want a change of scenery.

4. You want the chance to do something different, the sort of thing you can only do on holiday. Whether it's diving, or paragliding, or even just sitting on a beach all day, whatever you get up to has got to be better than working!

5. You might want to explore somewhere new, that you haven't been to before, or that people are all talking about. Why not go now before it becomes too commercialised?

6. You want to relax and get away from it all. Forget all your stresses and strains of daily life, and the bills, and the credit crunch, and go on holiday. For two weeks you'll be able to leave your worries behind and relax, and recharge your batteries.

7. If you don't get chance to spend as much time with your friends as you'd like to, then why see if you can go on holiday with them? Whether a fortnight in the sun, or a weekend in a city, you're sure to have a great time, and won't forget it in a hurry.

8. Maybe work commitments have meant that you haven't been able to spend as much time with your family as you would have liked. Why not see if you can make it up to them and yourself by booking a holiday?

9. Maybe you've been taking advantage of your commuting time, and have been learning a new language. Or, perhaps the children are keen to try out their new language skills. Why not book a holiday and try out your new language skills? It'll give you great practice to speak to native speakers, and you're bound to learn even more.

10. If you live near an airport, why not take advantage of cheap airlines and fantastic flight prices, rather than just watching the planes flying off to sunnier climes? With many great offers you're sure to find a last minute bargain.

Now you more about why you need a holiday, isn't it time you booked one?

Millenial Generation and the Baby Boomers

Having read some books on generation gap issues, and having had a couple of classes on the 4 different generations, it seems that it is a lot like studying different cultures. Understanding another culture starts with understanding our own culture and values first, and then comparing it with the other culture and seeing the difference. Of course, the characteristics presented here are some general tendencies, and may not represent every person. Not all Baby Boomers, Generation X, or Millenials are cut from a cookie-cutter mold, but many similar values and perspectives exist within each generation that can be condensed and used as a starting point for understanding.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

Baby Boomers (age 43 - 61), of which I am a part, have been described as hard-working and tend to have a very high work ethic. They are competitive in all that they do. They work long, hard hours, and are basically a "live to work" generation. A prominent value is how successful they are in their career. Baby Boomers and those they work with make fairly good teams, having a common goal to get the job done. They'll sacrifice weekends and holidays, and usually do what it takes to get things done. Boomers will routinely take on other tasks outside their job description if that is what it takes to "git 'er done."

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

Boomers tend to define themselves by what they do. Work is very important to them and to their sense of self worth and also their net worth. They define their lives, and define who they are, by what they do. Boomers value personal development. Authority figures can be loved or hated at the same time. Boomers yearn for visible rewards, such as certificates, awards, plaques and trophies. Trophies and other badges of honor demonstrate that they did a good job. They want to be rewarded with jobs of higher responsibility and want to get promotions. They need to be told that they did a good job, and want their supervisors to acknowledge the good job they did. They also need lots of material things, which are tangible rewards for their hard work, and they want lots of money. Money drives them. It is the reward for their labors and a measure of their success. They strive to build growing careers and professions, and tend to be workaholics. They will also quickly go into debt to achieve their vision of the American material Dream. Then they had kids.

The spawn of the boomers are the Generation X (GenX) kids (ages 28 - 42) and Millennial kids (age

Do You Need A Passport?

A passport is an official government document that certifies one's identity and citizenship and permit's a citizen to travel abroad and the case of a United States passport to enter back into the United States.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

When will you need a passport?

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

The answer depends upon which country you planning to visit. A passport is required by many countries upon entry to their country. Also, a document indicating proof of citizenship is always required to re-enter the United States. In some instances (Mexico, Canada, etc.), a valid driver's license and a birth certificate will suffice as the proof of citizenship; however, as indicated many countries require a passport to gain entry to their country and the United States State Department "recommends" a passport as evidence of citizenship in ALL cases.

Does my child need a passport?

Yes. Anyone traveling to a country that requires a passport must have their own passport no matter how old. The US Department of state has hired additional personnel to meet the demand for Americas extraordinary requests for passports. Records are being broken as the Department is working hard to ensure every US Citizen gets a passport in time for vacation and travel.
Regional agencies have worked through the weekend. Employees have been working overtime hours to meet the demand.

How to Make Baby Formula at Home

It is an undisputed fact that breast milk is best for your baby. If for whatever reason, you are unable to breastfeed, or you choose not to breastfeed, there are other options you can choose instead of going directly for store-bought dry baby formula. Though it may take a little extra time out of your busy "Mommy Schedule", you can make baby formula at home. You can choose a milk-based formula which is the most common form of homemade formulas.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

Breast milk is rich in whey, lactose, vitamin C, niacin and polyunsaturated fatty acids. This milk-based formula takes all of those ingredients into consideration in preparation. Adding gelatin to the formula will help with any constipation issues that may arise with a homemade formula and will give digestion a boost. When using a milk formula, it is important to buy an organically based product, free of disease and additives from cows which are pasture fed. This will ensure that your baby is getting its optimum nutrition. If you are unable to find organic milk in your area, the next best option is to get whole milk at the store. Make sure that it is unhomogenized. In order to restore the enzymes that will be lacking in the whole milk, you will need to add piima or kefir culture to the milk.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

The make baby formula at home recipe from Radiant Life Catalog is as follows:

2 cups whole milk, preferably unprocessed milk from pasture-fed cows
1/4 cup homemade liquid whey (See recipe for whey, below) Note: Do NOT use whey from making cheese--it will cause the formula to curdle. Use only homemade whey made from yoghurt, kefir or separated raw milk.
4 tablespoons lactose*
1/4 teaspoon bifidobacterium infantis**
2 or more tablespoons good quality cream (not ultra pasteurized), more if you are using milk from Holstein cows
1 teaspoon regular dose cod liver oil or 1/2 teaspoon high-vitamin cod liver oil*
1 teaspoon expeller-expressed sunflower oil*
1 teaspoon extra virgin olive oil*
2 teaspoons coconut oil*
2 teaspoons Frontier brand nutritional yeast flakes*
2 teaspoons gelatin*
1 7/8 cups filtered water
1/4 teaspoon acerola powder*

Nature Vs Nurture - A Sociological Approach to Feral, Isolated, and Institutionalized Children

A common question related to sociology deals with the nature of the human being versus the way it is raised. Does one know if he is a boy or a girl upon birth, or does he make this distinction based on the actions and words of those around him? How does prison affect the functionality of a person once he is released to the world? These questions are strongly related to the nature versus nurture - does a human enter the world with basic human function, or does he develop these functions as a result of those around him.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

One topic sociologists may study is feral children. These are children that were deserted at a very young age, with death usually the intention of the parents, but were rather raised and groomed by animals. Sociologists found that children raised by animals acquired the instincts and behaviors of the species that raised them. One example of this occurred in the 1700s, when a feral child known as "the wild boy of Aveyron" was discovered by scientists of the day. He was found in France in 1798, and it was observed that he walked on all fours, did not indicate pain related to cold temperatures, and pounced on small animals - devouring them raw in ravenous fashion. Although most sociologists will discard the significance of feral children because of the sparseness of cases, it still teaches us a lesson that children must learn how to act at a young age. This essential time of youth is when children develop many essential social behaviors.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

A slightly more common study is on isolated children. These are children that were raised by one person or a small group of persons in an isolated area with minimal or no contact to a typical society. One girl, Isabelle, was raised by her deaf, mute mother in the attic of her grandfather. Upon being discovered at the age of 6, it was found that she could not talk, and rather relied on gestures to communicate with her mother. She also had a disease called rickets as a result of an inadequate diet and a lack of sunshine. This basically made her legs useless. Her behavior towards strangers, men especially, was like a wild animal. She treated them with fear and hostility - and could only make noise in the way of strange croaks. Initially she scored nearly zero on an IQ test - but because Isabelle was discovered at such a young age, she was able to reach the learning level expected from her age in two years. It is possible that results of isolation can be reversed if the child is younger than twelve. The primary problem, however, was a lack of a language, which is basic to all human interaction. All other interaction can be divided into sub categories to vocal communication.

These first two studies, isolated and feral children, can be viewed through one of Charles Horton Cooley's theories on human interaction. Cooley, who lived in the late 1800s, created a theory that summed up how human development occurs, capturing the theory in the concept of 'the looking glass self'. This theory had three primary elements: we imagine how we appear to those around us, we interpret others' reactions, and we develop a self concept. The basic gist of it is that we look at those around us, and base our appearance and social interactions on what they do and what they expect. If a feral child is raised by animals, he is going to acquire the attributes of those animals. Likewise, an isolated child will base his actions on other isolated individuals or no one, and will develop little or no basic interaction skill.

Still more common than isolated or feral children is institutionalized children. Two or three centuries ago, orphanages were much different than they are now. Children were raised with little or no care on a strict schedule. On top of this, children were often beaten, ragged, and denied food. As a result, children coming from orphanages tended to have difficulty establishing close bonds with others, and have lower IQs. In an account of a good Iowa orphanage in the 1930s, children were raised in the nursery until about six months. They were placed in cribs that had tall sides, effectively limiting vision to the world around them. No toys were hung from the cribs, not mother held them closely. The interaction they did get was limited to nurses who changed diapers, bedding, and provided them medication. Although everyone assumed that mental retardation was a "he was just born that way" issue, two sociologists investigated and followed the lives of the children who were raised in this Iowa orphanage. H. M. Skeels and H. B. Dye began to understand that a lack of mental stimulation was depriving these children of the basic human interaction skills they needed to be effective members of society. In a study, they took thirteen children who were obviously retarded and assigned them a retarded woman who would look after them. They also chose twelve children who would be raised in the orphanage the usual way, and tested both groups for IQ. The first group was noted to develop an intense relationship with their respective 'mothers', and received much more

attention than their counterparts. While all of the studied children were still retarded, it was noted that the first group's IQs spiked by a jaw-dropping average of 28 points. In an equally startling statistic, it was found that the other group's average dropped by an average of 30 IQ points. This study demonstrated the importance of human interaction at a young age.

A final lesson can be taken from deprived animals. These are animals that were stripped from their mother at a young age and raised in isolation. A famous study regarding this topic was conducted by Harry and Margaret Harlow, who raised a baby monkey in isolation. They constructed two 'mothers' for their monkey, one which was a wire frame with a nipple on it from which the monkey could nurse, and one that was covered in soft fabric. They found that even though the first mother provided nourishment, the baby would cling to the soft mother when frightened, showing that the monkey felt more comfortable through intimate physical contact - or cuddling.

When the monkey was introduced to a monkey community, he was rejected, and had no concept of how normal monkey civilization was structured. He knew neither how to play normally with the other monkeys, nor how to engage in sexual intercourse, despite several feeble attempts.

Upon conducting this study with female monkeys, they found that those that did become pregnant became vicious mothers - they struck their babies, kicked them, or crushed them against the floor. These were monkeys who were raised in this isolated environment for years, and had no chance of integration to society. Other monkeys were observed to overcome these disabilities with increasingly positive results: a corresponding relationship with the amount of time spent in isolation. Monkeys isolated for three to six months were relatively easily integrated, while monkeys isolated for years suffered irreversible effects. When applied to humans, we understand that social interaction is key to a socially efficient product.

In short, society makes us human. Babies do not naturally develop into adults, and social ideas are not transferred via DNA. Although the body may grow, isolation victimizes them to be little more than mere animals. In fact, a lack of language skill results in an inability to even grasp the relations between people - such as father, mother, teacher and friend. In order to develop into an adult, children must be surrounded by people who care for them. This process called "socialization" shows that we are crafted by those around us.

How To Make A Christmas Pyramid Advent Calendar

Advent calendars are a fun and exciting way to countdown the days to Christmas. Each day a new surprise is revealed as Christmas Day gets closer.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

A Christmas Pyramid Advent Calendar makes the countdown even more exciting, as bigger surprises, such as ornaments and decorations for the tree, can be revealed.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

But perhaps the most exciting way to countdown to Christmas is to reveal, day by day, new elements for a nativity scene, culminating on Christmas Eve with a tiny baby to lie in the crib.

Advent begins on the fourth Sunday before Christmas Day and lasts for 21 days to Christmas Eve. So you will need 21 square boxes, all the same size, decorated with Christmas paper, or painted silver or gold. Alternating gold and silver, or red and green, looks even more impressive.

Take the lids and remove the rims from three sides on each lid, using a sharp craft knife, leaving one rim intact. Paint a thin line of craft glue around the edges with no rim and dip in glitter. Allow to dry.

Make a hole in the edge of the lid opposite the remaining rim - right in the middle - and poke through a gold colored split pin. Open out the split pin on the inside of the lid so that it stays put. Do the same with all the remaining lids. Number each lid from 1 to 21 using stick on numbers.

Using craft glue or a glue gun, secure the remaining rim of each lid to one side of each box, so that it opens like a flap. Allow to dry thoroughly, and then start assembling your advent calendar.

Place boxes 1-6 side by side and make sure they are perfectly aligned with the lids at the front and the split pin handles at the bottom. Using craft glue or a hot glue gun, glue each box to its neighbor so you have a foundation row of six boxes.

Glue boxes 7-11 side by side for the second row, and place it on the first row as if you were making a pyramid of blocks. Glue it in place. There should be half a box length of the bottom row at each end of the second row.

Glue boxes 12-15 together, and make the fourth row with boxes 16-18, followed by 19-20 for the fifth row, and the remaining box - number 21 - on top. You should now have a pyramid stack of 21 boxes with flaps in front that open upward.

Put a Christmas tree decoration, a small gift, or a piece of a nativity scene in each box. The 21st box should hold something special - a glittering star for the tree, a Christmas candle, or the baby for the crib.

Place your pyramid on a shelf or in the window. You can further decorate it by covering the sides with glitter or placing Christmas ornaments on the steps.

Ten Things to Do if You Visit Bangladesh

Rich culture, beautiful tourist spots, and hospitable people. These are the qualities that all great tourist spots have. And, incidentally, these are also the very qualities that you will find in the beautiful country of Bangladesh.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

1.) Catch a glimpse of the Tigers

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

Tigers, specifically the Royal Bengal Tigers, are magnificent creatures, with their proud and noble bearings and beautifully patterned coats. Watching these tigers gives us a sense of excitement and danger all rolled into one. It's too bad that they're endangered, but still, in Bangladesh, you can see these beautiful creatures by visiting the Sundarbans National Park.

2.) Fun in the Sun and Sand

If you're looking for beautiful blue beaches to sunbathe, to swim, or to simply walk around in, then you must go to Bangladesh's Kuakata. Kuakata is a beach resort that has been recently developed. It is located in the southern part of Bangladesh, but the sea isn't the only thing this place offers though, because in Kuakata, you can also observe the culture of the Rakhane Tribe.

3.) World's Longest and Broadest Beach

If any old beach just doesn't cut it, why don't you try going to Inani beach found in the South of Bangladesh. It is the world's longest and broadest beach and is found in Cox's Bazar. Inani Beach, however, is not as developed as the other beaches such as Patenga, so if you want all the tourist perks, then it's probably best if you just go to Patenga.

4.) Boating through Bangladesh

If you're in the mood for boating through the rivers and observing the lush jungles in Bangladesh, then you could try going the Sunderbands National Park. This is a park with several beautiful areas which can only be accessed by using a row boat. If you're lucky, you'll also see some of its beautiful wildlife.

5.) Try some Fresh Water

If you're tired of the salty waters of Bangladesh's beaches, why don't you try going to the Rangamati Hill district where the Kapati Lake is located? There, you can indulge in several activities such as swimming, sailing, and fishing. The Kapati Lake is an ideal destination for anyone who likes peaceful outings rather than busy and noisy ones.

6.) Cleanse your Soul with Some Tea

People who don't like the strong taste of coffee usually prefer the much smoother and cleaner taste of tea. So, if you're a tea fan, you certainly can't miss going to Sylhet, located just North of Dhaka. Sylhet is known for its tea-growing traditions, and Srimongol, a place in Sylhet, is the center of the tea gardens in Sylhet.

7.) Games up!

If you want to satiate your sporty side and get away from nature a bit, why not head on to the City Stadium? There, you can enjoy a game of hockey, football, and cricket. You might even get a chance to play with the locals in the playgrounds if you so choose.

8.) Go Bird Watching

If you want to see a sample of Bangladesh's exotic wildlife, why not go to Rajendrapur National Park, located just 31 miles north of the capital city. Bring your binoculars with you, maybe even your camera and take a few snapshots of the beautifully colored birds residing in the area.

9) Take a walk in the Zoo

Unfortunately, being constantly on the move to look for various animals can be slightly tiring. And there's always the chance that you'll get disappointed at the end of the day because of the poor turnout. If you don't like taking this risk, why not just go to the National Zoo located at Mirpur near the River Turag?

10) The City of Mosques

If you're going to Bangladesh, you absolutely can't miss going to Dakha, the city of Mosques. The wonderful architecture and designs are to die for. Visit Baitul Mukkaram Mosque, the Star Mosque, and the Chawkbazar Mosque, and you'll be sure to gape in awe at the magnificent designs.

Don't Confuse Your Baby's Yeast Infections With Diaper Rash

Yeast infections that affect a baby's diaper area not the same thing as diaper rash. Unfortunately, many well meaning parents use regular diaper cream and baby powder on the yeast infection and this will do nothing to cure it.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

A yeast infection is different from a diaper rash in that it appears as a flat, red rash with scalloped edges that have several tiny rashes around it. A yeast infection rash may extend along the pubic area and onto the lower part of the baby's abdomen.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

The yeast infections that affect babies are called Candidas albicans, which is the most common cause of all types of yeast infections. A pediatrician can determine whether a rash on the groin or a thrush in the mouth of babies is a yeast infection. To get a definite diagnosis the doctor may examine the scrapings of a yeast infection under a microscope.

Babies who are on antibiotics or who are being breastfed by mothers who are taking antibiotics are at higher risk for yeast infections. That's because antibiotics kill the good bacteria in the body that keep yeast in check. Without these bacteria around, yeast and grow more abundantly.

While applying diaper cream may bring your baby temporary relief from the itching and soreness it will not heal the infection. Without proper treatment, a yeast infection in the baby's diaper area will get progressively worse.

Anti-fungal medications are the only types of medicine that can get rid of yeast infections. Some pediatricians might write a prescription for Nystatin while others may recommend and over the counter medicine like Lotrim AF to treat the diaper yeast infection.

Using antifungal cream, soaking the baby in warm water two times a day and frequent diaper changes will usually clear up a yeast infection within a few days. While you are treating the yeast infection make sure that your baby's diapers are loose enough to let air in. When changing your child's diapers, make sure the skin on his buttocks and groin area is clean and dry.

Some holistic medical practitioners advocate the use of a diaper cream containing tea tree oil to help clear yeast infections in the diaper area. Others recommend using aloe or pressing damp chamomile teabags directly on the baby's rash. If the yeast persists for more than a week or if your baby has fever or chills you should consult with your pediatrician.

Yeast infections in baby's can occur despite our best efforts. However, frequent diaper changes can decrease the chances of an infection occurring. Children with yeast infections in the diaper area should not be excluded from daycare because these types of infections are not contagious.

If your baby recently had thrush (a yeast infection in the mouth), her or she may end up with a yeast infection in the diaper area, too. That's because yeast passes through your baby's digestive system when he eats and winds up in his stool, which eventually lands in his diaper right next to his warm, damp skin. Yeast thrives in warm, damp environments.

14 Amazing Things That Newborn Babies Can Do, And What They Cannot

It is an exciting time for new parents when their newborn arrives into this world. They may seem vulnerable, and they are, but there are a couple of amazing things that newborns can do, much to the delightful amusement of many people.

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

Healthy newborns can typically do the following at birth or within the first few weeks of their life:

Tuscany 4 In 1 Crib

1. See things 8-12 inches away (the distance from breast or milk bottle to mom's or dad's face).

2. Can hear and may move their heads and eyes towards something of interest, or move their heads if their breathing is blocked (but sometimes not enough to avert suffocation).

3. Can identify their parents' voices.

4. Can taste and smell and have shown preferences for their own mother's milk and dislikes for strong, nasty odors.

5. Can draw back when pinched or pricked.

6. Can yawn and sneeze.

7. Have a "startle reflex," in which the arms and legs may shoot out or their body may stiffen when startled by a loud noise or other stimulation.

8. Have a "rooting reflex," in which touching the baby's lips gets him or her to open its mouth for feeding, perhaps smacking lips, sucking and breathing eagerly.

9. Have a protective reflex in which their tongues thrust out any item in their mouths (such as pacifiers). This reflex is intended to guard them against choking.

10. Have a "stepping reflex" if held upright and a "crawling reflex," in which they seem to sort-of crawl when placed on their stomach.

11. Have a "grasping reflex," in which they squeeze their little hands around a finger or other object.

12. Have a "righting reflex," in which when pulled up by the arms, they can lift their head up, despite a floppy neck.

13. Get a big kick out of faces, their own or other people's, and may be able to mimic expressions a few days after birth.

14. Favor the contrast of black-and-white patterns, especially the edges and in the shapes of bulls-eyes, diagonal stripes, faces or checkerboards.

Having listed the amazing things newborns can do, it is usually too much to expect of babies one month or younger to do everything. These are the things they cannot do, and when to expect them:

1. Smile intentionally (this takes about six weeks, although parents often swear it's sooner).

2. See very far away (you'll observe as baby's eyes begin to focus further away).

3. Lift head up (perhaps a bit by end of month, but little neck control yet).

4. Sit unaided when put down in sitting position (at about 5-6 months age).

5. Eat any solids, and will choke if given them (feeding solids sometimes starts at about 4 or 5 months).

6. Drool (drooling may start at about 3 months).

7. Have teeth (rarely a newborn is born with a tooth, but most infants get first teeth at 4-12 months).

8. Grip, pick up or grab objects (by 6 months, however, you may be wishing for a baby straitjacket at the grocery store).

9. Beg, whine and cry for heavily advertised toys.

10. Watch TV.

Now that you know what to expect (or not) of your baby, it's time to enjoy these little moments with your newborn.
