BREATHE - This is the most important want to work through pain keep your breathing at a constant and steady rate. Holding your breath and tightening your body up will only make it more painful. Breathe, stay calm and relax.
DISTRACTION - Bring something to keep your mind off of the pain and distracted. For most people the iPod is a magic tool and can really help. Bring some nice soothing and calm music like reggae or whatever relaxes you. Probably not a good speed metal time however.
TAKE A BREAK - Another option is to take a few short breaks during the session. Your artist probably wants to get the work done so he or she can move on to their next client. However, taken a minute or to break is something you can always ask for.
MULTIPLE SESSIONS - If it is too painful you can always do it in two or three sessions. Take a bit at a time and then stop and come back at it. Don't try to be too brave or strong if it hurts you then it hurts so take it in sessions.
